When Work Feels Empty, Start Here

There’s a moment I hear about often from clients…

It doesn’t always come with fanfare.

There’s no dramatic breakdown.
Just… a quiet realization:

“I can’t do this anymore.”

Maybe the work is fine on paper, but you’re not excited to start your day.
Maybe you keep pushing, but deep down, you’re asking:
Is this really all there is?

It’s what I call Middle-Aged Groundhog Day—

Each day looks just like the last.
You’re not growing.
You’re not seen.
You’re not sure who you even are anymore.

And it’s exhausting.

Why This Happens (And Why It’s Not Just You)

This feeling doesn’t come out of nowhere.
For many professionals, especially mid-career, it’s the result of years of:

  • Adapting to toxic or unsupportive work environments
  • Surviving layoffs, budget cuts, and shifting roles
  • Losing the thread of what once made your work feel meaningful
  • Ignoring that quiet inner voice that’s been asking for more

And if you’ve experienced job loss or burnout, the grief can be even deeper.

Because it’s not just the job you lost.
It’s your routine.
Your identity.
Your sense of stability.
Sometimes, your community.

You might feel like you’re floating, disconnected from your career and unsure how to move forward.

Let’s Talk About Grief
Yes, grief.

That heavy, foggy, aching feeling that no one seems to talk about in the context of work.
But it’s real—and it deserves space.

You can grieve:

  • The job you gave your all to
  • The career that’s no longer viable
  • The version of yourself you once were
  • The dream that no longer fits

If you’re here—feeling like something’s missing but not sure what’s next—
You are not broken. You are human.
And there is a way forward.

Where to Start When You Feel Stuck
You don’t need a 10-year plan today.
But you do deserve to reconnect with yourself—slowly, gently, and intentionally.

Here are a few places you can begin:

1. Name What’s No Longer Working
Start by telling the truth—at least to yourself.
What parts of your current (or past) work drained you?
What did you have to push down or ignore to keep going?
What have you outgrown?

Clarity often begins with honesty. And sometimes, the first move is simply saying, “This isn’t working for me anymore.”

2. Reconnect With What Matters
Your next chapter doesn’t have to be a copy-paste of your last.

Try journaling on one of these questions:

  • What kind of work feels meaningful to me now?
  • What kind of impact do I want to have?
  • What values do I want my next job to reflect?
  • What kind of environment do I need to thrive?

Your answers don’t have to be perfect. They’re just a starting point.

3. Acknowledge the Grief
Give yourself permission to grieve—not just the loss of a job, but everything that came with it.

You’re not “too sensitive.” You’re not “taking too long.”
This is hard. It’s real. And it deserves to be honored.

If you feel stuck, it might not be because you’re unmotivated.
It might be because your heart is still healing.

4. Stop Settling for Survival
You are allowed to want more than a paycheck.
You are allowed to want work that nourishes you.
You are allowed to grow—even now.

Yes, survival matters. But so does fulfillment.
You don’t have to choose one or the other.

5. Imagine What’s Possible (Even If You’re Not Ready Yet)
You don’t have to leap before you’re ready.

But what if you gave yourself permission to imagine something new?

  • A job that honors your values
  • A path that makes space for your strengths
  • A way of working that feels aligned with who you are now

Let the vision come slowly. Let it evolve.
But let it come.

If You’re Not Ready to Job Search Yet, That’s Okay

You might not be ready to rewrite your resume or hit “apply” just yet.

That doesn’t mean you’re not moving forward.
It just means your next step is inward.

And that’s where the real transformation happens.

If you’re in that in-between space—grieving what was and not quite ready to rebuild—I see you.

You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You just need space. Support. And a soft place to land.

That’s what I’m here for.
