When the Job That Was Hurting You Finally Ends

Sometimes the ending of a job, even one that was hurting you, still knocks you sideways.

That was true for one of my clients, Sami.

She came to me while navigating a genuinely toxic work environment, one that eventually ended in a layoff.

On paper, that might sound like a clean break. In reality, it rarely feels that way. Even when a job is not good for you, losing it can still shake your confidence and your sense of who you are.

What Sami and I worked on together was not just a job search.

It was rebuilding her sense of her own value from the ground up. We got clear on her goals. For the first time in her career, we got specific about what actually served her in an employer, and what did not.

The result was not just a new job.

It was what she describes as a complete shift – in her focus, her profession, and how she defines professional satisfaction and success. She walked away with a new outlook on what she actually wants from her work and her life.

I share Sami’s story because I think it says something important.

A layoff, or an exit from a place that was not serving you, is not the end of your story. Sometimes it is the beginning of a much better one, once you have the support and clarity to see it.

If you are in the middle of a hard ending right now, whether it was your choice or not, that clarity is available to you too.

You do not have to have it all figured out to take the next step. You just have to take it.
