06 Mar Is AI Hurting Your Resume? What Hiring Managers Can Spot Instantly

It’s one of the most common questions I’ve been hearing lately: “Should I just use AI to write my resume?”
With tools like ChatGPT and other resume generators becoming widely accessible, it’s tempting to type in your job history and let a program create something polished in seconds.
And while AI can absolutely be helpful, there’s a growing concern I’m seeing in my work as a career coach:
When AI writes your resume for you, hiring managers can often tell.
Let’s talk about why – and how to use AI wisely without losing your voice in the process.
What Hiring Managers Can Spot Instantly
Most hiring managers review hundreds of resumes. They develop a quick instinct for patterns.
When a resume is heavily AI-generated, it often shows up in a few ways:
• Language that sounds polished but vague
• Overuse of buzzwords without clear impact
• Generic accomplishment statements that could belong to anyone
• Perfectly structured bullet points that lack personality
• A tone that feels slightly detached or robotic
It’s not that the resume looks “bad.” It’s that it doesn’t feel real.
And in today’s hiring environment, authenticity matters more than ever.
Some organizations are even experimenting with AI detection tools or internal screening processes that flag overly templated or machine-generated content. While not every company uses formal detection software, recruiters are increasingly aware of what AI-generated language looks like.
The result?
Resumes that feel generic may be overlooked – even when the candidate is fully qualified.
The Risk of Letting AI Take Over
When you allow AI to write your resume fully, you risk losing the nuance of your real experience.
AI doesn’t know:
• The emotional intelligence you brought to a difficult situation
• The subtle leadership moments that don’t show up in metrics
• The personal growth behind your career transitions
• The values that guide your work
It pulls patterns from the internet.
But your career is not a pattern- it’s your story.
And if your resume reads like thousands of others, it becomes much harder to stand out.
So, Should You Avoid AI Completely?
No.
In fact, I use AI strategically with many of my clients. The key is how you use it.
AI should support your thinking – not replace it.
Here’s one of the most effective ways I guide clients to use it: Instead of asking AI to “write my resume,” we use it to analyze alignment.
For example: “Compare this resume to this job description and give me the top 5–10 areas where they align.”
This question helps identify:
• Missing keywords
• Overlooked value propositions
• Skills that could be emphasized more clearly
• Areas where language could better match the job posting
That kind of analysis is incredibly helpful.
It allows you to strengthen your resume without losing your voice.
A Smarter Way to Use AI in Your Job Search
Here are a few ways AI can be useful – when used intentionally:
• Refining clarity. Ask it to tighten wording or remove redundancy.
• Comparing your resume to a job description for keyword alignment.
• Generating practice interview questions based on a role.
• Improving the structure of a cover letter draft you’ve already written.
• Brainstorming accomplishment statements you then personalize.
Notice the pattern?
You remain the author. AI becomes the assistant.
The Balance Between Professional and Personal
The goal of your resume and cover letter isn’t to sound impressive.
It’s to sound clear, credible, and human.
Hiring managers are not looking for perfection. They’re looking for connection and competence.
If your materials sound overly manufactured, they can create distance rather than interest.
And in an already competitive job market, that subtle difference matters.
A Final Encouragement
If you’ve been relying heavily on AI because you’re overwhelmed, discouraged, or unsure what to say, that makes sense.
The job search today is complex.
But your story deserves more than automation.
AI can absolutely be part of your strategy. Just don’t let it erase the very thing that makes you hireable – your lived experience, your growth, and your voice.
If you’d like support with refining your resume, strengthening your interview presence, or using AI strategically (without sacrificing authenticity), I’d be honored to help.
As a career coach, I work with professionals who want to show up polished, aligned, and confident – not robotic.
