07 Aug How to Get Unstuck: 5 Small Moves That Build Career Momentum

If you’re feeling stuck in your job search right now, I want you to know something:
You’re not alone—and you’re not doing anything wrong.
Getting stuck is one of the most common (and frustrating) parts of a career transition. I help my clients navigate this all the time as a career coach.
It can show up quietly, like procrastinating on updating your resume… or loudly, like questioning everything about your path.
And it often stems from more than just the job search itself.
Maybe you’ve sent out dozens of applications and heard nothing back.
Perhaps you’re grieving the loss of a career that once felt like home.
Maybe you’re overwhelmed by everything happening in the world, and the pressure to keep moving forward just feels like a lot.
Whatever your version of “stuck” looks like, it makes sense.
It’s human. It’s real. And it’s okay.
But here’s the key:
You don’t have to stay stuck forever.
And you don’t need a perfect plan to start moving again.
Sometimes the smallest steps are the ones that break the cycle of doubt and hesitation.
Here are five small moves that can help you rebuild momentum in your job search, gently and powerfully:
–
1. Revisit Your Strengths
Instead of starting with your resume, start with your real strengths—the ones that may have gotten buried under self-doubt.
What do people come to you for? What problems have you solved in your past roles? What do you love to work on when no one’s watching?
It’s about reconnecting with what’s already true about you.
–
2. Take a Micro-Action
When you’re stuck, even a small task can feel overwhelming. That’s why micro-actions matter.
Pick one tiny step and do it today:
- Save one job listing that interests you
- Edit one bullet point on your resume
- Write a “practice” cover letter just to get your words flowing
Small actions compound. One completed step gives you the energy for the next.
–
3. Change the Scenery
Sometimes the mind needs space to breathe before it can move.
If you’ve been staring at the same screen for hours, try stepping away.
Take a walk. Visit a coffee shop. Journal somewhere new.
Changing your physical environment can help shift your mental one.
–
4. Reflect on Alignment (Not Just Achievement)
Instead of asking “What job can I get?” try asking:
“What kind of environment do I thrive in?”
“What kind of work feels meaningful to me?”
“What values do I want my next role to honor?”
This reflection doesn’t have to lead to a perfect answer, but it can help you recalibrate your compass, especially if your last job wasn’t aligned with who you are now.
–
5. Ask for Support
You don’t have to figure it all out alone.
Whether it’s a friend, a coach, a former colleague, or a mentor, having someone to talk to about your thoughts, can shift everything.
They can help you see yourself more clearly, remind you of what you bring to the table, and cheer you on when your own voice feels quiet.
Asking for support isn’t a weakness. It’s wisdom. Let Go of All-or-Nothing Thinking

One of the biggest things that keeps people stuck?
Believing they have to do it all… or do nothing.
But momentum doesn’t come from a rigid plan—it comes from one small action at a time.
You don’t have to get it perfect.
You just have to begin.
If you’re feeling stuck, I want to gently encourage you to take just one step this week.
Maybe it’s revisiting your LinkedIn.
Maybe it’s booking a coaching session
Maybe it’s just telling someone how you’re really doing.
Whatever it is, it matters.
And so do you.
