If you’re facing – or fearing – a career transition right now,
I want to start by saying this: you’re not alone, and what you’re feeling is completely valid.
When you’re in a company that’s laying people off or you’ve recently lost your job, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. There’s grief, fear, uncertainty, and a sense of losing control.
I call it anticipatory grief – the kind of heaviness that lingers even before change happens. It’s not something you just brush off with a positive quote or a pep talk. It’s real, and it deserves space.
But here’s what I also know to be true: after the fog begins to lift, when you’re ready, you have an opportunity to reframe this moment into something more powerful than you might imagine.
Because career loss, while painful, can also be the start of something deeply transformative.
Step One: Feel It to Heal It
Before we talk about moving forward, we have to acknowledge where you are.
Losing a job—or even anticipating a loss—can feel like losing part of your identity. It’s okay to grieve. It’s okay to feel angry, anxious, or unsure.
You don’t have to rush through those emotions or hide them.
When you allow yourself to feel it, you open up the capacity to eventually heal it.
Step Two: Confidence Isn’t Something You Have—It’s Something You Build
One of the first things to take a hit during a job loss is your confidence. But here’s the truth I share with every client: confidence is a skill, and it can be rebuilt.
Start by reflecting on the moments in your career when you felt most proud. What challenges have you overcome? What strengths have you relied on? What have people consistently appreciated about your work?
If you’re not sure where to begin, take the VIA Character Strengths Assessment. It’s a free, science-backed tool I recommend to all my clients that can help you reconnect with your unique strengths and use them as a foundation for your next chapter.

Step Four: Clarify What Matters Most
In moments of transition, you have a unique opportunity to reconnect with your values. What’s most important to you in your work now? Is it flexibility? Purpose? A supportive culture? The chance to grow?
This is your moment to be intentional. To rebuild not just your career—but your life—in a way that actually supports you.
And if you’re not sure where to start, I’m here to help you find clarity. That’s what coaching is all about.
Step Five: You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
One of the most important things I tell clients: You don’t have to figure all of this out by yourself. This is hard. It’s emotional. It can feel lonely and confusing.
But you are not alone.
As a career coach, I’ve walked with so many professionals through these exact moments—helping them regain their confidence, define a new direction, and take empowered steps toward careers they truly love.
If that’s what you’re craving right now, I’d love to support you.
